The Federal Government has announced its commitment to a Cheaper Home Batteries rebate scheme, which is anticipated to commence from 1 July 2025. While the program design and official start date are yet to be confirmed, we’ve received numerous enquiries regarding potential Battery STC eligibility. GreenDeal is pleased to provide the following pre-launch update and FAQ based on currently available information and industry indications.

Q1: Can I install batteries now and still claim Federal Battery Rebate?

Not recommended at this stage. According to current guidance, the Cheaper Home Batteries rebate program is anticipated to begin from 1 July 2025. Until official scheme details are released, including commissioning rules, installing or commissioning batteries prior to this date may risk ineligibility.

Q2: Can I start preparing Federal battery rebate documentation now?

Yes. While applications cannot yet be submitted, GreenDeal’s platform allows early job creation to help you start collecting batteries details and on-site evidence such as installation photos and compliance documents in line with AS/NZS 5139:2019 and AS/NZS 3000:2018 standards.

Q3: If I’m installing both PV and Battery, how should I handle the rebate claims?

Create two separate job records. If you are installing both a PV system and a battery, we recommend creating two separate job records: one for the PV system, which can be claimed immediately under the existing Small-scale Technology Certificate (STC) scheme, and another for the battery installation, which will fall under the forthcoming Federal Battery Rebate Program. This separation allows your solar rebate to be processed without delay, while the battery documentation can be prepared in advance and submitted after 1 July 2025, once the rebate scheme officially launches.

Q4: Can I claim both PRCs (NSW) and the Federal battery rebate?

This is not yet confirmed.  It remains unclear whether the Federal battery rebate and the NSW Peak Demand Reduction Scheme (PDRS) can be claimed together, as the interaction between the two programs has not yet been formally defined. GreenDeal is monitoring regulatory updates and will provide further clarification once the eligibility rules for combined incentives are confirmed.

Q5: What about battery incentives in other states?

Expected in VIC and WA. It is anticipated that state-based programs in Victoria and Western Australia may align with the federal rebate. However, details remain subject to confirmation and policy alignment.

Q6: How much is the Federal battery rebate worth?

Indicative only. While some industry sources have speculated rebates of up to $17,500 may be available depending on system size and eligibility, the Federal Government has not yet confirmed rebate values. Final program design, including incentive levels and any future reductions, remains subject to official release.

Important Reminders from GreenDeal

GreenDeal is committed to keeping you informed as we await the official launch of the Federal Battery Rebate Program. Once the government releases final program details, including compliance requirements and documentation standards, we will provide immediate updates to support your application process. In the meantime, please note that our platform is already equipped to assist with evidence collection aligned with the anticipated scheme requirements. This allows you to begin preparations with confidence.

Importantly, we strongly advise against commissioning any battery systems prior to 1 July 2025. Doing so may affect your eligibility for the upcoming rebate, unless formal government guidance states otherwise.
