*This new rebate is part of the existing Peak Demand Reduction Scheme (PDRS). The PDRS is a NSW Government program that runs parallel to the NSW Energy Savings Scheme (ESS). From 1 November 2024, residential battery installations will be introduced as an eligible technology under the PDRS.
What is the difference between BESS1 and BESS2?
BESS1: Involves installing an approved, controllable battery system.
BESS2: Entails entering a contractual agreement to make the battery demand-responsive.
How do PRCs benefit the energy system and end users?
By reducing demand during peak periods, PRCs contribute to a stable, secure energy grid while facilitating a shift towards 100% renewable energy. Additionally, homeowners and businesses benefit from reduced energy costs when high-efficiency technology is paired with Energy Saving Scheme incentives.
Under BESS1, if you install a 40kWh battery, would you be eligible for the first 28kWh, or can you claim up to 28kWh?
For eligibility under BESS1, the battery capacity must fall between 2kWh and 28kWh. Systems exceeding this range do not qualify.
Are the PRCs created based on the total battery size or usable size?
PRCs are calculated based on the battery’s usable capacity as specified on the Clean Energy Council (CEC) list. For example, a 14.2kWh Tesla Powerwall would be eligible based on its 13.5kWh usable capacity.
What products are eligible?
The list of eligible batteries is periodically updated. To confirm eligibility of products, please use our product lookup tool. [Product list look up link - List.pdf]
Is it possible to claim BESS1 and BESS2 simultaneously, or is there a waiting period?
Both rebates may be claimed concurrently, provided that all required documentation is submitted.
Can PRCs be claimed for batteries installed but not commissioned before 1 November?
No, PRCs are only available for batteries commissioned after November 1. Proof is required to show that no prior battery existed at the start of the installation.
Can batteries bought under loans or Power purchase Agreement (PPAs) claim BESS1?
Yes, financing options are acceptable, provided the customer contributes a co-payment of at least $200 (+GST) at the installation or deposit stage.
